Under the influence of long-standing patriarchy, many parents in China prefer boys - a phenomenon you can see in the increasingly absurd sex ratio data. Some parents may even abandon their baby girls in orphanages or kill them.
Some girls are lucky enough to survive, be adopted by families in better conditions, get a good education, go to a better environment, and earn a good income... The biological parents who abandoned them saw the girl's situation, took it upon themselves to identify themselves and seek their support. This is reported in the news from time to time, and I often feel angry about it.
Jingwei is a character in the classical Chinese mythology "Shanhaijing." She followed her father, a god, on a boat trip to the sea, but accidentally fell into the sea, and her father did nothing about it. But instead of dying, she turns into a bird. She did not return to her chosen family, but day by day from elsewhere to bring rocks into the sea, trying to fill the sea.
I see the metaphor and connection between these two stories. I hope that the women who are fortunate enough to survive will get out of this mess and never look back.
